-ag, -ig, -ab Families
All the word families we have learned so far (-at, -an, -it) have short vowels. Each one has a vowel ('a' or 'i') followed by a consonant ('t' or 'n'), and this is what makes the vowel short. Here's the rule:
 

Here are three new word families. All of these have short vowels.

-ag, -ig, -ab

Try hard to put the word family together the first time you say it! This will make reading go much faster!

  • Pay attention to each letter you see to catch which word family you are looking at.
  • Listen to yourself say the word family name.
  • Look at the letters.
  • Think about how the family name sounds.

Let's start with one word from each of these word families:

bag

big

cab

Now we're ready to read all the words in the -ag, -ig, -ab families!
