Sight Words
In order to read start reading many sentences, we'll need a few extra words that aren't part of the -at family.

  • You will learn some of these words quickly as sight words. You will learn to recognize them by sight for now, without sounding the words out.
  • These are some words we use all the time.
  • We'll learn their families later!
  • Sight words will be printed in gray at first when they are used.

The first sight word is made of a single letter:

a

This is pronounced /ā/, just like the name of the letter.  Or, sometimes we just say /ə/, but you'll recognize it either way. We use this word when we say "a cat" or "a rat."

The next word is used in the middle of lots of sentences:

is

We use this word when we say: "That is a cat."

And the last sight word tells you that something is sitting on something:

on

As in, "I am sitting on this chair."

Note
  • Future sight words will be introduced in sentences and will be written in gray
  • After a sight word has been used several times, it will no longer be written in gray.
  • Some additional words, such as names from the Bible, will also be written in gray, but it's not necessary that the student learn such names immediately. These are for the teacher to read.
